How can I clean off tacky flux?

I've been using tacky flux to solder small pin-pitch packages with a flat tip, and it's been awesome. But it is quite a terrible time when it comes to cleaning. I've tried 70% isopropyl alcohol up to 91% Isopropyl alcohol plus an anti-static bristle brush. There always seems to be a matte, sticky finish when the alcohol evaporates, and I can never seem to get the flux out from under the chips. How do you get your boards so clean?

Xylene is a much more powerful solvent that is also safe to use on PCBAs. I use it in my ultrasonic cleaner. You can follow up with a cleaning with IPA if needed.

In my case, my laboratory uses "specialized" parts cleaner fluid. It comes in a spray can and you just need to use a cloth to wipe it off along with the remaining flux. You should be able to find the can in any store (brick and mortar/online) that specializes in electronics equipment.

Are you letting the Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) air-dry? I don't let the Isopropyl alcohol air-dry. I blow it off while wet, with canned air (or similar). If you just dissolve the flux in IPA, and let it air-dry, the dissolved flux solids will just precipitate on to your board. Just a thought. If you still have questions, a Youtube video of your technique and problem would be very helpful in diagnosis and cure. :-)
