BulkyMIDI-32 (Vertical Rotary Encoder)
NB! This board was only used with earlier BulkyMIDI-32 builds, it is NOT needed when you are using the updated designs. I've kept it as a shared project as there are a few that have these boards, and want to add features not initially added instead of building a whole new one.
BulkyMIDI-32 is based on the mt32-pi project, bringing you the all the auditory excellence that was the Roland MT32. While developing I started looking into adding a rotary encoder as supported by the original project, but I was not able to find one that was ready for mounting at a right-angle - from browsing around the Internet it seems that they've existed at some point, they were just too expensive for me to even consider. The well known KY-040 module could in theory have been used, but it had an enormous PCB compared to the actual components and so there was no way that it'd be able to fit.
I needed to make my own, this allowed me to design a board with tabs at the top and bottom that will slot into the boards above and below - adding some mechanical strength to the joints. The encoder is just a cheap EC11 rotary encoder, while the shaft shown in the pictures is of the D-type variety I recommend looking for one that is sold as a "knurled"/plum shaft as finding knobs becomes quite a bit easier. If you would like to use this adapter for your own projects, the symbols and footprint are included on the github-repository.
This is a vertical rotary encoder module adapter, check out the related shared projects for the other designs related to this project. This module was designed in order to be mounted on BulkyMIDI-32 Extras, it will also slot into the BulkyMIDI-32 itself.
