Halogen free PCBs still aren't that common and all of the bugs aren't worked out of the systems yet, but they are starting to show up here and there. I suspect that like RoHS a few years back, we will be seeing more and more as time goes by.

If you do feel the need to try out a Halogen free PCB, our experience here suggests that they are more sensitive to moisture than standard FR-4 and are a bit more brittle. That might be an issue when de-panelizing boards or when putting a lot of mechanical stress on a pcb.

An article in "Future Circuits International" suggests that some of the replacement flame retardant chemicals may have other environmental risks too, but I guess that seems to be the case with just about everything we pull up these days to replace something that is a known hazard.

Anybody with some good practical experiance here, feel free to chime in.

Halogen-free PCBs: Halogen-free PCBs, being made with materials that do not contain halogen elements, generate fewer harmful substances during manufacturing and disposal, resulting in a relatively smaller environmental impact.

3.Fire Safety:

Halogenated PCBs: Halogenated flame retardants used in PCBs can release a large amount of toxic gases when exposed to flames. These gases can pose risks to personnel and equipment.

Halogen-free PCBs: The materials used in halogen-free PCBs have good flame retardant properties, reducing the generation of harmful gases during a fire and enhancing safety.

Now, why are halogen-free materials used for PCB exports? This is mainly due to the following reasons:

1.International Environmental Regulations: Many countries and regions have enacted environmental regulations that restrict the halogen content in electronic products. They require PCBs used in electronic products to minimize or eliminate the use of halogen elements. To meet the requirements of export markets, PCBs for export typically choose halogen-free materials.

2.Health and Safety Considerations: The use of halogen-free PCBs helps reduce the release of hazardous substances, minimizing potential health risks for operators and end-users. This is crucial for compliance and sustainable development of exported products.

3.International Competitiveness: Halogen-free PCBs have become a trend in the international market. By selecting halogen-free materials for PCB manufacturing while meeting environmental and health safety requirements, product competitiveness can be improved, leading to a larger market share.

In summary, there are differences between halogenated and halogen-free PCBs in terms of material composition, environmental impact, and fire safety. To comply with environmental regulations, ensure health and safety, and enhance international competitiveness, halogen-free materials are commonly used for PCB exports.
