What Is a Solderless Circuit Board?

Solderless circuit boards are excellent ways of testing designs for appliances and circuits. They do not require many tools or solder so you can use a solderless circuit board over and over again. Solderless circuit boards work well in a laboratory or classroom setting.

Function
Solderless circuit boards are used for prototyping and designing applications. The circuit board allows electronic components to be made into circuits throughout the boards without the use of tools, solder or any permanent changes to the circuit board. Do not mess with the circuits while the circuit board is powered, as you will risk bodily harm or harming the circuit board.

Types
Solderless circuit boards differ in size; therefore, number in how many posts, strips and points are included. Some size examples are 6.5 inch x 2.125 inch; 6.5 inch x 4.25 inch; 6.5 inch x 3.125 inch; 6.875 inch x 5.75 inch; and 7.25 inch x 7.5 inch. Some sizes come with jumper wires and some are sold separately. Some include multiple strips of connecting points with their own individual bus strips and terminal strips.

Features
Solderless circuit boards have bus strips, terminal strips and binding posts and have hundreds of connecting points. According to Tooling U, bus strips are grounded metal bars in a breaker box to which all neutral and grounding wires are connected, and terminal strips are devices that join wires or cables--they typically snap into a metal rail or are screw-mounted on the panel of a control enclosure. Binding posts are metallic posts attached to the electrical apparatus for convenience in making connections, per Think Exist. Connecting points are where you thread and insert the jumper wires; they are separated by 0.1-inch spaces.

Materials
Solderless circuit boards are typically made out of nickel-plated clips, inserted into a plastic housing. On the bottom side of the solderless circuit board is aluminum backing with voltage and grounding posts. All these materials that make up the circuit board will last for up to 5,000 insertion cycles and testing.

Compatibility
Solderless circuit boards are compatible with all components that have lead diameters up to 0.032 inch. Solderless circuit boards can prototype circuit applications that have frequencies of 50 MHz or more. Depending on the size and quality of the solderless circuit board, it can withstand circuit operations between 5,000 to 10,000 times. Components can be added into the circuit board perpendicular to each other and parallel.
