8051 mini Board Design in KiCAD
8051 is one of the most used microcontrollers in the field of electronics with its application ranging from consumer electronics to embedded systems. It was introduced into the market by INTEL and since then it has led to great revolutions in the area of electronics. In this project am going to do the design of the 8051 Mini Development board and am going to make use of the Atmel AT89C51 for the success of the project. The idea is to make use of the available components together with the 8051 to make a mini development board.
Components:
DC Jack x 1
47uf Capacitor x 2
30pf Capacitor x 2
7805 x1
3mm LED x 1
AT89C51 IC x 1
330Ω Resistor x 1
10k Resistor x 1
Crystal Oscillator 12Mhz x 1
Male 2.54mm Header Connector x 1
Female 2.54mm Header Connector x 2
6mm Push Button x 1
Description:
8051
in this project am settling for the AT89C51 which is low power but high performance 8-bit and has a 4K byte of flash programmable and erasable ROM. The device is manufactured by utilization of the ATMEL high-density nonvolatile mem technology.
This is an open software available on google that we use to do the schematic and PCB layout. It is a very nice tool that enables designers to generate the fabrication output files necessary for the production of the designed products.
Schematic design
the below schematic is very simple and does not consume too much time to design. The design was made in KiCAD. I have made the files available for download and you can access them.
The power supply section is made up of the LDO voltage regulator LM7805 which generates stable 5V output utilized by the 8051 microcontrollers.
The microcontroller area has the AT89C51 and all the necessary connections have been done as shown in the schematic. The connections of the microcontroller are pulled from the manufacturers' datasheets.
PCB Layout
this is completely done by use of KiCAD where even the three-dimensional render is available. The whole design of the board is on the bottom layer so that it can be easy to fabricate.
The ground is added on both sides so that we can minimize the level of noise.
Conclusion
The project is a good one as it encourages how to design your development board for growth.
