Sweet Manufacturing electronic steering system
The project is a EPS (electric power steering) system based around the raspberry pi pico. The project runs off of a car battery. The sensors used in this project are two torque transducer in the steering column and a shunt resistor in series with the dc motor used to provide steering assist. The torque transducers measure applied torque on the steering wheel by the user and the shunt resistor provides a feedback system in which the pico can closely monitor motor characteristics of the dc assist motor. Their is also more external hardware that drives and oscillates a drive signal through the transducer and then rectifies and filters the altered signal to be read the microcontroller. Also power distribution since the whole project is powered off a 12V battery and a motor controller and relay for a fail safe if the system losses power. FYI the project isn't finished but has a great start and explanation/understanding of what is left to be done. Currently the project is operational but could use some improvements to get it closer to a finished project comparable to a EPS system found in most cars today.
I encourage you to read and look through the report for more detail and description of the project. This project was started upon the release of the raspberry pi pico which made it an amazing learning experience with little open source information to reference. Some libraries used were edited and altered to be compatible with the pico due to very limited libraries available when this project was started.
Overall this project was a school project pertaining to my studies as an electrical engineer. This project covers and takes part in a vast amount of my studies and really touches on all the main subjects in electrical engineering. Electronics, Hardware, Software, EMF understanding, Motors and motor characteristics.
I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as I enjoyed working on it!
