Interactive resin trophy for demoscene digital arts festival

Overview of Deadline Demoparty

Deadline Demoparty is an annual non-profit digital and multimedia arts festival held in Berlin, Germany.

It's organized by a team of around 25 volunteers under the helm of the non-profit organization Computerkunst e.V.

Deadline will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year from October 4th to 6th, 2024, is a vibrant gathering of creative minds who explore the artistic possibilities of computers and digital technologies. The event is a part of the global demoscene culture, which lately has been recognized as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in several countries, including Germany.

At Deadline Demoparty, participants and visitors alike engage in a wide range of creative competitions, spanning from digital graphics and music to real-time animations known as demos. The festival is not just a competition but also a cultural celebration, offering seminars, workshops, DJ sets, and spontaneous activities such as retro gaming and creative Lego building. The event is hosted at ORWOHaus, a creative space in Berlin that supports artistic endeavors and fosters a community of innovation and creativity.

Details About the Trophy

For the past nine years, we have honored the winners of our competitions with handmade unique trophies, which have become a cherished tradition of the festival. These trophies are a physical representation of the creative spirit that defines Deadline Demoparty. However, for our 10th anniversary, we want to create something truly extraordinary—a trophy that not only embodies the artistry of the demoscene but also incorporates cutting-edge technology.

Here are pictures of some of the trophies of previous years:

This year’s trophy will be a pyramid-shaped resin piece (see picture below), with the centerpiece being a custom-made PCB featuring an array of LED lights. The LED array will be designed to represent the logo of the festival, lighting up in various patterns using a sound-to-light mechanism. This innovation will not only make the trophy visually stunning but also interactive, creating a unique keepsake that reflects the festival’s blend of art and technology.

PCB Specifications

To bring this vision to life, we designed a PCB with the following specifications:

PCB Specifications:

  • Layers: 2
  • Material: 0.8mm FR4
  • Panel Size: Approximately 80x90mm, containing 3 designs (1 repeated 4x) per panel
  • Track/Spacing: 6mil
  • Minimum Drill Size: 0.2mm
  • Solder Mask: White
  • Silkscreen: Black
  • Finish: HASL/Pb
  • Vias: Tented
  • Copper Weight: 1oz

Assembly Specifications:

  • Component Type: SMD only
  • Total Parts Per Panel: ~300
  • Unique Parts Per Panel: ~25
  • LEDs: Supplied by us or ordered directly from our supplier
  • Other Parts: To be supplied by PCBWay

The LED array will consist of 170 individually addressable RGB-LEDs, creating a dynamic and programmable display that is central to the trophy's design. We plan to build around 50 final trophies (for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place of each competition), therefore we plan with 75 PCBs, to have some buffer.

Below is the latest draft of the PCB layout:

How PCBWay Can Help

As a company renowned for its high-quality PCB manufacturing, we believe PCBWay is the perfect partner to help us realize this ambitious project. Given the non-profit nature of our festival and its cultural significance within the global demoscene community, we kindly request PCBWay’s support in the form of a sponsorship to manufacture the PCBs for our 10th-anniversary trophies.

By sponsoring our project, PCBWay is contributing to a unique cultural event that celebrates creativity and innovation in the digital arts.

In return, PCBWay will of course be prominently acknowledged at the festival. We hope you will consider supporting our project and helping us create something truly memorable for the winners of Deadline Demoparty 2024. We look forward to the possibility of working together to bring this exciting project to life.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
