ODetect - Overdose detection Project
### DESCRIPTION ( Introduce yourserlf and your project)
We are a group of UBC students developing an open-source technology platform to address the ongoing opioid overdose crisis.
Current problem
Opioid overdose deaths in 2017 recently passed 1100 (British Columbia)
Deaths due to opioid overdoses overwhelmingly (80%) occur indoors in private residences
The BC take home naloxone program has given out 40,000 kits out of 550 sites. A naloxone kit is never too far away
Physiology
Respiratory depression is an early marker of opioid overdose
Gold standard respiratory rate measurement is through spirometry
Respiratory rate can be extracted in a non-invasive way through the plethysmograph waveform (pulse oximetry). Frequency, Amplitude, Baseline variations in the pleth waveform are correlated to Resp rate.
Alternatively, temperature measurement at nostrils/mouth indicates inspiration (ambient air, lower temperature) versus expiration (air heated up, higher temp)
### TECHNICAL DETAILS (With project photos)
3 part solution
Sensor - Reflectance pulse oximetry and thermal airflow sensor
Wireless transmission - Bluetooth low energy transmission
Algorithm - Signal processing, adaptive learning to go from Pleth waveform to RR
Form will be something worn by the user (wrist, finger, hangs between nose and mouth over the ears for example)
How it works? System will push sensor data to phone. Use computing resources on the phone to process raw data. Networks phone is connected to
System level response - Collaboration with brave.ly to take device reports and solicit a system response
### Words to PCBWay
PCBway has been instrumental in the process of PCB design. With turnaround times of under a week and great quantities for some of the least rates out there, they have really been helpful for this project.
