RockETS sounding rocket team

Founded in 2012, RockÉTS is a science club at École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS) dedicated to the development of high-powered rockets and to the promotion of aerospace science and technology. The team is comprised of around sixty devoted members contributing to the team’s wide engineering skillset. Furthermore, as a tribute to Canada’s Inuit communities, RockÉTS has been naming its projects and rockets in Inuktitut for several years.

The club’s cornerstones are based on the sharing and cultivation of engineering knowledge. It helps enrich its community in two ways: by offering students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and assimilate lessons through a variety of unique aerospace-related events and by inspiring new generations to pursue stellar dreams

Always on the lookout for new challenges, and keen to innovate, RockÉTS has initiated its biggest project to date: the development of a hybrid propulsion engine. Such a project requires a major overhaul of most rocket subsystems. Representing the goddess Pana from Inuit mythology, this project guides the team towards a new era.

Anirniq is a modular, compact, and scalable avionics system used by the team since 2019. This system stands out every year as one of the most remarkable technological innovations in the Spaceport America Cup. Anirniq, which symbolizes the soul in Inuktitut, occupies a central position within each rocket, enabling the club to achieve its goals.

The payload, built in a CubeSat format, can be ejected into the upper atmosphere, hence its name, Timmiaq, which represents a bird. It has a modular design, enabling it to adapt easily to different missions. To reduce environmental impact, the payload is designed to be reused between flights.
