Sandmaze HAT - Raspberry Pi portable HAT with PD input

This is the Capstone Project from McMaster University! By a group of 2025 undergrauate from multiple engineering program. We are developing a mounted portable mapping system designed for 3D cave mapping, utilizing LIDAR, an IMU, and a Time-of-Flight camera to enhance geoscientific research.

This board contains a Type-c PD3.0 Protocol Power input that can take 20V5A and output 5V5A to the Pi by a buck converter. And for the low loss I2C communcation, we convert the jumper GPIO to the Type-c for the IMU module. And we added multiple protection like ESD, Overvoltage/Overcurrent, independent power control switch. And we also add some LED for status and pushbutton for command control. All the design is open-sourced on Github!

This board could be modified to have a higher current output for other application (But you need to change all 6A security fuse). And you could Also customize your own push button command or status light LED. Since all command comes from the GPIO header of PI, you could Check the PCB layout to find which pin is connected to wich component.

Here is a sample output from our draft system, with one lidar, IMU and 2 depth camera.

We would keep updating our progress on Github!
