Team Spongebot - Robocup Junior 2020 open soccer robot
We are a team of 2 15-year-old boys entering our 3rd year of competition in RCJ Open in the USA. We build autonomous robots to compete against other teams in 2-on-2 soccer matches. In the past 2 years we have advanced from 6th to 3rd place in the national competition. For 2020 we want to build stronger, faster robots to get a shot at advancing to the world competition! Prior to RCJ, we competed for 4 years in First Lego League robotics competition.
- We entered our first RCJ Open Soccer competition in 2018. In 3 months, we designed and built 2 autonomous soccer robots. We used android phones for computer vision and soccer logic, and microcontroller boards for motor control and sensor data acquisition.
- In the 2019 season we improved our robot design, moving from 6th to 3rd place at the USA competition in NYC. Major changes included a switch to Raspberry Pi and and the python implementation of Open CV, and upgrades to our chassis construction, addition of a dribbler, and upgraded motors.
- For 2020, we are making major improvements
- Design custom PCBs for all sensor and control functions.
- All chassis components designed in Solidworks and produced with laser cutting
- Full redesign of dribber with laser cut components, custom controller PCB, and high power motors
- Code migration from python to C++
- Design custom PCB for kicker pump circuit
- Design custom PCB for field line detection array
