With the C64 JoyKEY I wanted to build a simple joystick, but given how well it worked I wanted it to work with more than a handful of systems. You could certainly use it directly as a three-button joystick for the Commodore 64, this module is however not really about the Commodore 64 - it's all about the ZX Spectrum +2 or +3 machines. Contrary to using the same DB9 plugs - the joystick ports on these machines were not compatible with the more common Atari-style joysticks, in fact only the Sinclair SJS and SJS2 were officially supported. So, if you want to plug anything else directly into those machines, you'll need to use an adapter - this is such an adapter!

As this is a rather small adapter, I've added a second edge connector to the PCB - this so that you can also use it as a direct adapter if you want to use your regular, boring non-C64 JoyKEY joysticks. For that reason you can decide which input connector you will want to use, in the pictures you can see one of each.

NB! Note that this should not be confused with the Kempston interfaces that plugs into the ZX Spectrum expansion slots, those were actually Atari-style and don't require an adapter.
