  • my board's CPLD gets too hot that I can't touch it (it burns my skin). it gets hot till it stops working and the heatsink cannot cool it down. why XC9972 CPLD gets hot? is it a normal behavior?

Hi! Above 50-60C⁰... it already causes a burning sensation. This circuit works (tolerant) with 5 volts, so it heats up a little more, so it can reach 80-85 degrees during operation.

Thank you for your reply. 1- my IDE with the 5v version of the CPLD board stops working after 2 minutes because of heating up. so the IDE board became unusable. 2- it boots only mechanical 3.5" HDD and can't boot from CF. I think there are two major problems: first, getting hot causes CPLD to stop working and the second one is signal levels do not match the CF logic levels. I built another board with XL 3.3v series and used 3.3v as core voltage and 5v for IO voltage. in this case, Amiga boots from CF and the board work fine with less heat and long stability. what can we understand from two IDE board behaviors?

  • Your schematic is using the XC9572XL part, which is a 3.3V supply logic. But the original design is for a XC9572. Where are you getting the XC9572 parts from?

    Sövény Imre 2019-10-19 05:33:30Reply

The first one I used XC9572XL because I ordered XL by accident. I've read somewhere that XC9572 is pin compatible with XC9572XL, Vcc is max 4v but 5V tolerant, Vcc and IO pins, I've had 10 of the same PCBs and nothing to lose, so I tried, ....and it worked ....still working. I made 10 pieces, this same schematic... five with XC9572 and five with XC9572XL, programmed with the passing firmware (it in the zip file). All of them works. The XC-9572 parts from E B A Y seller "dicikey-max" The XC-9572XL parts from E B A Y seller "chipsgate"

Could you please be super specific which which firmware you used for which CPDL, since there are 4 versions in the zip.

Uhhh......It was a long time ago and I did not work with that since, but... My design is based on the work of others, from https://www.mklboards.fi/ide/ide68k.html ...and since I used xc9572xl chips and because "ii68-v4xx-140219-7l19-xc9572xl.jed" is signed as the tested version (I allways prefer tested versions) and I don't remember having any difficulty making it or having to try anything else ....I think I used that one.

  • Hi there , I build one for myself but its not working at all . I also build tf520+IDE68K and that one is working fine . Any ideas what's wrong ? is those two projects works with the same firmware?

  • This works great. I got my CPLDs in the mail today so I could finally build mine and it works fine. A 44 pin 2mm version would be great.

I have tried a couple of CPLDs. XC9572 Rev E worked fine, but my Rev C do not work. They program fine but refuse to be recognized at boot. I tried two Rev C versions with no luck. Hope it's useful info. I got a random selection when I ordered CPLDs from china, and only one was rev E. Will try to get from a reputable source like Digikey for my other boards.

Mine don't work any more. I tried it yesterday and it wouldn't boot like before. Wondering if my CPLD's are not 5V tolerant after all.

I used Xilinx/Impact software with a Xilinx USB programmer (DLC9LP)

I put it in the downloadable (not a pretty one).

  • PCBWay engineering says they can't make this board. Two traces that go between pads are too close.

    Sövény Imre 2019-09-09 23:07:44Reply

PCBWAY approved the Gerber file I sent them ( I also replaced in downloadable). Now there will be no problem in production.

  • I ordered this pcb from a different production company. The wire/pad distance is ok if you see in other gerber viewers so normaly it wouldnt be a problem, but PCBWay engneering software add same extra thickness around PAD drill holes before production, and because of that the pads and wires come closer. PCBWay contacted me and asked me to solve the problem. I told them about these difference and I sent them a gerber file. If there is still a problem they will contact me. If it is ok, I replace the zip file. I shared because i want to be useful... I help to solve it.
