The Portiloop
The Portiloop is a cutting-edge EEG device designed to capture and process data in real time for closed loop stimulation.
Closed-loop brain stimulation refers to capturing neurophysiological signals, quickly identifying events within them that are of scientific interest, and producing auditory, magnetic or electrical stimulation in time to interact with and modulate brain processes. It is a powerful method in fundamental neuroscience as it allows for hypotheses to be tested with causal manipulations. The roles of neural events can now be precisely determined, leading to better models of brain function in health and disease. Applications have been proposed in clinical contexts, such as restoring degraded memory function in older adults. Existing tools are expensive, cumbersome, and offer limited experimental flexibility. Our goal is to lower barriers for research groups to adopt closed-loop stimulation. To this end, we developed the ‘Portiloop’, a complete closed-loop stimulation system (including both hardware with in-built electroencephalography and software), which is portable, low-cost, and extremely flexible. Software and schematics are freely available to the community as an Open Science initiative to encourage further development and accelerate closed-loop neuroscience research. All software is available on GitHub and allows controlling the device from a simple Graphical User Interface (GUI).
More information in the scientific paper of the Portiloop.
The last hardware iteration of the Portiloop device (sources) consists of a PCB built around an ADS1299 chip with connectors for a Coral Dev Board Mini. The ADS1299 is an ADC responsible for processing analog EEG signal.
