555 Timer 12VDC Motor Speed Controller

Using a 555 timer and PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation), by varying its duty-cycle, we can vary the speed of a DC motor by sending bursts of current to it. The 555 is configured as an astable square-wave oscillator, and RV1 (the 10k pot) is connected to the control voltage pin (pin 5). By varying the control voltage towards the positive supply rail will vary the duty-cycle and the frequency and drive the motor faster and eventually full speed. The PWM frequency is around 200Hz and varies with duty-cycle. Conversely, lowering the control voltage closer to 0V will slow the motor down until it eventually stops. On the schematic M1 (the motor) represents J2 on the PCB.
