  • Wait, so does Arthrimus' original design not work? I ordered a couple of his boards before I found this revision... Are they no good?

It may work technically, but it has a major ground problem. You should be able to patch the ground issue (hairline disconnected). Seems like there was another minor problem also…. I don’t remember. The tiny trace of ground that is there isn’t enough to power the board….not reliably. I would expect brown outs or glitches. I fixed those issues in the gerber films because I didn’t have a working schematic to work with.

Thank you, I'lll give it a go.

  • You may be confusing kilo “bit” and kilo “byte”. 32kiloByte = 256 kilo bit. 128kiloByte = 1008 kilo Bit. This is what the ram parts are numbered in the “bit” numbering. AS6C6264 is a 64kiloBit part = it’s capacity is 8 kilo bytes. The 1L5B - the 5 is Nintendo’s designation for 256kbit but the footprint can accommodate upto 2megaBit device. Though only 1megabit (128kB) parts have ever been used on a SA1 pcb.

  • I’m not sure what you mean about “half the size”. If the pinout is the same and can physically fit, sure. I recommend the Alliance part because it’s standby power draw is very low. Maybe 2uA. I don’t think the Gradius hack saves so maybe the power usage won’t matter.

Hi, I just mean the half size of your minimum recommended SRAM, your recommendation being 256Kb - 1Mb, the Sony SRAM I'm using is 128Kb and is pinout and footprint correct. As far as the Gradius 3 SA1 CPU rework goes, it uses the 128Kb SRAM for in game action and for save back-up of the high scores, which is pretty cool. Thanks heaps for the reply mate, I appreciate it greatly, I may reach out again, only if you don't mind of course, thanks again. Stephen

  • Hi, Thank you for providing this and doing the hard work to get it up to spec. I'm just wondering if a 128Kb Sony CXK581000ATM SRAM is compatible, it has the same footprint and pinout as the Alliance AS6C1008 SRAM, but is half the size as your minimum, I have this ram on a official cart working correctly with Gradius 3, so I thought I would ask. Thank you Stephen Houston
