COMMODORE 64, 64K-CUPCAKE-CART
64K-CUPCAKE-CART
Hello,
This is a tested and working circuit.
64K-CUPCAKE-CART is a 64KB capacity Commodore 64 cartridge.
64K-CUPCAKE-CART is designed for making a cartridge, from any ".PRG" extension Commodore 64 software.
".PRG" extension C64 software is a single part working c64 program. Multiple part loading software are not suitable for this cartridge.
64K-CUPCAKE-CART can also work as a generic 16KB C64 game cartridge.
64K-CUPCAKE-CART can also work as a 16KB I/O-1 automatic shutdown DELA module. (You can prepare 16KB module roms with "dela eprommer ii" program.)
ROM FILE CREATING (via windows pc)
Inside the "64K_CUPCAKE_CART.zip" file you will find two files. "SAMPLE.BIN" and "starter64k.bin"
"SAMPLE.BIN" is a sample ROM file, you can just program it into a w27c512 and begin to enjoy your cartridge.
"starter64k.bin" is a 513 BYTES code, for transfering data from cartridge to computer memory, and then shut the cartridge off.
To prepare a ROM file for 64K-CUPCAKE-CART; first, you need to get a ".PRG" extension C64 program/game, and run it, to see if it is working.
Then you need to load your ".PRG" extension program from a "HEX Editor" software. (you can use free "HxD Hex Editor") Then sellect and delete first and second bytes of your ".PRG" extension program. (2 bytes from the beginning)(it is usually "01 08")
"Sellect all" and "copy" it.
Then load "starter64k.bin"" file from the "Hex Editor".
"Paste" the coppied data after last Byte of starter64k, (line 200) after (FF). (FF will remain)
Save the file with a new name like "EPROM.BIN"
Your ROM file is ready for programming.
You can Download "starter64k.bin" and sample ROMs from the bottom of this page.
COMPONENTS
64K-CUPCAKE-CART PCB
CD4516BE
DIP16 IC SOCKET (Some cd4516be chips can be defective, you should use a socket)
2pcs. 1N4148 DIODE
2pcs. 68K 1/4 watt RESISTANCE
1μF ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITOR (any voltage more than 5volts)
w27c512 (CUPCAKECART is suitable for 27128 (16KB), 27c256 (32KB), 27c512 (64KB))
DIP28 IC SOCKET (For eprom)
You also need an "Eprom Programmer" for programing your ROM file in to eprom.
In order to protect your electronical devices, always turn off your Commodore 64 before connecting or unconnecting any device.
Gerber files can be changed at any time. Before paying for the PCBs, be sure to update your orders!
Have fun
Thank you.

Hi. Unfortunately I don't have a C128 so I don't know the answer to your question. Cupcake-64K cartridge has a sensitive timing and may not work. Thank you for asking.
There is no schematics. But it is not very complex, most traces are standard 8-Bit data and address traces. You can easily solve and draw schematics.
Thank you. This type of pads are old school, but no longer useful nowadays. Maybe it can help a little if it is necessary to desolder the ICs. I do not think, this is more prone to later damage, I have 40 year old circuits still working like this one, it is like one layer PBC. But, I will think to change it. :)
Hello Marco, I answered your e-mail. Sorry for the late answer. . I examined the photo, I can not see any thing wrong on the upper side. I think, There can be 2 reasons of the problem. 1) Do you use an original PLA chip in your commodore 64 ? If PLA is not original that may cause problem. 2) Some chinese 4516 chips can cause problem, chip timings may not be correct, that can be a reason. . The jumpers on PCB are correct, there is no need to change them. . Can you please build another PCB and try different brand 4516 chips ? .Please write me the results. . Thank you.
Thanks for support, i have already made another cart with different Eprom and cd4516 but same problem, all the cd4516be come from aliexpress and for this reason yesterday i have bought one genuine piece from Europe, i will test as soon as I receive it and i will post here the result. Thanks a lot.
yes the pla is original
Update! Some days ago i have received a 4516 from fairchild (don't know if original or not) and still doesn't work, for this reason i decided to buy from Mouser 10 genuine CD4516 TI ic, today i have received the ics and it works perfect!!! Thanks a lot Marco
You're welcome Marco Pantanetti, and I thank you for update information. :)
I am sorry no. Actually this cartridge is designed for only one .prg file. If you want to add more than one .prg file to the rom then you should prepare a single .prg file with a menu and then you do the regular procedure. To prepare a single .prg file with a menu, there is joiner2020.prg (it is a beta-test version) in the zip file, (@ key saves the single file to disk). Or you can search internet for this kind of better utility program. Thank you.
thanks for the reply i still think its a very good project and have order a few boards to give it go and will look into making a single prg with a menu system
Would there be any documents for the joiner program on its use
thanks for the reply i still think its a very good project and have order a few boards to give it go and will look into making a single prg with a menu system Would there be any documents for the joiner program on its use
I am sorry no, there is not any documents for joiner2020.prg . But it is not hard to use; copy joiner2020.prg and the other programs in to a diskette. Then run joiner2020.prg and load the programs via joiner2020.prg then at the end press "@" key. (Total file size must not be more than about 55-60KB.)
Hi have tried that wish i could post pics as the first program seems to load in as small stars seem to count along and then the program asks again for program name and after typing press enter and the outer border of the screen looks like it is loading a fast load program and stays like that forever if you dont turn it off
Hi, "joiner2020.prg" is not a very stable program. Please use real 1541 drive, do not use any fastloaders or different kernal ROMs, and please use standart C64 file names. If you zip and e-mail your files to me I can try for you, c64istanbul@bikom.com
Hi thanks for letting me know the joiner program requires a 1541 drive mine no longer works and use a sd2iec drive so that would explain the reason why it does not work would there be any other program you know of that may do the same job would just like to say thanks for all your help it much appreciated thank you
Hi Corey, you can try this, https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4002142 , if you did not use IC sockets many standart box should do the job, like this; https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:692797 Thank you very much.
I am sorry, I can not understand why do you need gerbers. Can you please explain via e-mail: c64istanbul@bikom.com
I am not sharing gerbers, because I do not want them printed out of PCBWay. Some people can download gerbers and print them from different PCB companies.
Yes it is optional. It can be left out.
Yes, you can. Follow the instructions. If you have any problem doing it, please e-mail me.
You can also try these sample eprom images including "impossible mission". https://archive.org/download/cupcake-eproms/CUPCAKE%20EPROMS.zip
is there a way to load these .bins on Vice 3.1, I wanted to test them? I don't seem to have any luck
I am sorry, no. VICE does not recognize this cartridge at present. If you send me your binary file via e-mail I can try it for you. c64istanbul@bikom.com
Thank you, I think you can. if you send me your binary file to email: c64istanbul@bikom.com , then I can try and inform you. Please, minus 2 bytes and add the code.
