  • Hi, great project. I have completed most of it and just testing the sensors .Is there much trouble to change or add code to allow uploading to Weather Underground server. I was interest in creating and adding my station there. Thx Dave

  • Hi there and congrats for this idea and projet. I'm on the way to finish mine. I'm in the printing process. I have a little problem with the print. As suggested in comment, i've changed my solar panel to a bigger one as I'have not so many sun as you :) My solar panel is 130x150. My question : is it possible to have original 3d file of top piece to modify or can you create a new one for this size ? I'm quite newb in 3d printing actually. Thx in advance

  • Hi, this is a really great project! I have just finished soldering the 2nd PCB after testing the first one for the last 6 months. Personally I would recommand treating the PCB solder joints and components with a conformal coating or varnish. This IoT project has been spread to my social network widely and some more enthusiast jumped on creating their own wather station based on the provided design. Having trouble with charging the battery too ends up in exchanging the solar panel to a 5V/0,8A/4W panel with dimensions of 20x20cm. Reason behind is the availability of sunlight in my garden related to the position of the weather station. Beside this, the BME280 is measuring the internal heat having the station positioned in direct sunlight. Adding a DS18B20 connected in parallel I am now looking for getting the program updated as I am facing issues with Blynk / Blynk IoT and would like to push the sensor data to SQL running on a RaspberryPi in parallel. Unfortunately I am not that gifted with Arduino IDE. WWW tutorials does not match with my needs. Can anyone of you advise on a solution? This would be really appreciated. Best Achim

Adding a reference for potential interest as I have linked my 2nd weather station PCB to my homematic system (based on the developement or Jerome: https://github.com/jp112sdl/HB-UNI-Sen-WEA). Have fun!

  • Hello I am at the beginning and have a big problem. This diode is not available anywhere, which one can I use as an alternative? Greetings and thanks a lot Joachim

  • I received the pre-populated PCB from PCBway. I have a question about the BME280 and BH1750. The connectors are labelled different on the board I received. The pins for the bme280 match with the bme280 on the board (vin, gnd, scl, sda). For the BH1750 pins they do not match, the BH1750 pins are (vcc, gnd, scl, sda) but on the board they are labelled (vcc, gnd, sda, scl). When I run an I2C scan test on the board it only sees the bme280 board. When I connect the two boards with an esp32 on a breadboard it sees both the bme280 and bh1750. My question is the board just labelled wrong that I received or am I missing something in my code so that both boards work on the PCB.

  • Nice project! But i have to warn you considering BME280 for outside use. Due to his innate data it can't work stable in humidity conditions exceeded 80% long enough hence it's going to degrade quite quickly. I've changed several of them while decided to work out my own sensor with "refresh" functionality.

    Engineer 2021-04-05 02:35:52Reply

This makes no sense, what do you mean by “innate data”. It’s a humidity sensor it should able to operate above 80%. The data sheet states condensation is allowed. Please be clearer if you have something to say.

Although the message may seem harsh and with a low degree of technicality, from my experience I can assure you that BME280 sensors - even when provided with proper micro-shielding on the sensor unit to avoid direct contact with condensed water - tend to degrade very quickly in "open environments". Either inside a 3D Printed Enclosure or a classic ABS Enclosure with just a minimal hole for ventilation, from my experience, those sensors never passed the 6-months mark and ended up being frequently replaced. Sure, this design offers a quick "swap-out-swap-in" for the sensor, without the need to make any additional soldering work.

It's not only my personal opinion, we have community of people who interested in home automation. But, i have to insert little disclaimer, sure all ours sensors purchased on Ali ... ,that might suppose a fake.

Could you recommend something else that would be better

  • For places with less sunlight like central europe, one battery seems not to be sufficient. My wemos D1, sends data every 10 min and the (in my case 2500mAh) battery was dead.

    hellstorm 2021-04-21 05:10:23Reply

Sorry forgot to say that it was dead in aprox 23 days

    Roman Wojnar 2021-04-30 15:30:36Reply

So it's probably not about the battery, but about the solar cell. He needs to use a more powerful one.

    hellstorm 2021-05-03 17:09:40Reply

Yap, I agree. I've swapped the 200mAh panel for a 500mAh, also changed the battery for a LG MJ1 (3500mAh) and so far the results seam very promising

Which solar panel did you select ? North West Europe probably requires the same upgrade to 500 mAh

  • Good afternoon, Thank you for posting this project, its very much appreciated I had a couple of questions, firstly please how does the UV sensor get adequate light inside the cage? I cant find a suitable unit that is waterproofed to be exposed to the elements. 2nd is it possible to update this PCB so it uses a BMP380 or BMP388 for the temperature or perhaps a HDC1080 as these seem to be a little more accurate than the BMP280 :) Thanks once again https://hackaday.io/project/86912-explog-exploration-logger/log/123294-choosing-the-right-sensors

  • Hi! Great to see this featured in our great Australian electronics hobby magazine DIYODE. I had already bought a set of boards from PCBWay and am gathering parts to put one together. Just got my latest edition and opened it to find this project. https://diyodemag.com/features/diy_solar_powered_wifi_weather_station_esp32

  • Looking forward to building this. Quick question though, what would it take to update Weather Underground? Still new to Arduino.
