  • Another great project! Thank you! I just built my first one and it seems to work great. One question, is there a detailed listing anywhere of which dip settings correspond to which RAM values? (3k, 8k, 16k, 24k, etc). I have experimented a little bit and I end up with a lot of strange looking values in between. I am using 62256 chips in both sockets if that makes a difference. Thanks again!

VR is write enable for BLOCK5 (especialy used for cartridge games) . R3-R2-R1 are enable/disable for RAM 3-2-1, B5+B3+B2+B1 are enable/disable for BLOCK 5-3-2-1 . Some RAM parts, like BLOCK5, can not be accessed by BASIC ROM, so it does not change free BASIC memory at the start screen. All RAM parts can be seen with the VIC-20 RAM-TEST program I shared above. Thank you.

  • No matter what I do I cant get more then 28159k to appear on screen. I may have a bad 62256 but not sure. R1,R2 AND R3 Each add 1k of ram but iff I add b1 it only adds 8k (up to 11775k). Then B2 it goes up another 8k (19967) and finally B3 to the full 28159K. Switching B5 on makes no change. Any thoughts?

It is normal to see 28159KB, you cannot see more on the VIC-20 start screen, but it is possible to see it through the ram_test.d64 program.

I added the ram_test.d64 D64 image at the bottom of the page. You can open the ZIP file and run it on your VIC-20.

  • Why is the 220 uF capacitor there? It is not in Ruud's schematic... I just get a black screen on my PAL VIC-20 when the cartridge is inserted. It does not seem to matter if all the dipswitches are set to on or off.

The 220uF capacitor is for voltage stability. If you have TL866 Minipro Programmer; can you please test 74LS21 and the static RAM chips? Sometimes the chips may be faulty. The cartridge can also work without the BLK5 RAM chip. If you send detailed photos to c64istanbul@gmail.com I can take a look. Thank you for asking.

I think you are right that it is faulty components. I have testet the 74LS21 and the 62256 chips in my minipro and they fail :( Strange thing is that the 74L21 seems to work fine on a breadboard. I will try to source new parts from Mouser to ensure that the quality is alright and test with those. Thanks for your help.

  • You can purchase the box design I rearranged for the cartridge from the address below. https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/commodore-vic-20-35kb-27-8-ram-expansion-cartridge
