(DIY) THE FINAL CARTRIDGE III+ FOR COMMODORE 64
(DIY) THE FINAL CARTRIDGE III+ FOR COMMODORE 64
This is a tested and working project.
This The Final Cartridge 3 Plus PCB is an Easy DIY project, all components are through hole and marked on the PCB, it is easy to solder, easy to make ;)
The Final Cartridge III was a popular extension cartridge which was created for the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128, it can be operated on the Expansion port of the C64 or the C128. It was developed in 1987 from the Dutch company RISKA B.V. Home & Personal Computers (based in: Rotterdam in the Netherlands). It provides over 60 new functions to the C64-user (e.g. BASIC-Extension, Fastloader and -saver for the 1541 with an acceleration factor of 10, Freezer, Monitor). Additionally there is a graphical user interface (Desktop) with windows (similar to GEM or Windows). From the hardware there is a Reset- and a Freezer-Function, allowing the program execution to be stopped to be resumed later.
Thanks to the original Producer: RISKA B.V. Home & Personal Computers (1987-1993)

You will need a programmer for EPROM
If you have a programmer capable of testing IC chips, such as the 74LS series, you should remember to test them before soldering. Some chips may be defective. (TL866 Minipro Programmer can test some logic ICs)
In order to protect your electronical devices, always turn off your Commodore before connecting or disconnecting the cables or any other device.
Gerber files and component list are subject to change without notice. Before paying for the PCBs, be sure to update your orders!
As you can see I have uploaded many projects and I am still working on new projects. If you have any questions, please look for answers online. Unless I specify explicitly, all my projects are tested and confirmed to work under normal circumstances before being shared. I'm sorry I didn't have enough time to answer all the questions.
Use this PCB at your own risk !
Have fun
Thank you.

I shared it at "Schematic and Layout" downloads.
Thanks for your sharing.
I understand what you said, but I think 5 USD for 10 pieces of PCB is not too expensive. Because of PCBWay supports amateur PCB designers like me, I share my PCB designs only on the PCBWay site. PCBWay donates 10% of the cost of every PCB sold to PCB designers. Thank you for asking.
Sincerely thank you for your support. We are committed to building a more excellent community, providing a platform for more electronics enthusiasts to showcase themselves.
it is not a switch. it is optional +5V power output, if needed for sd2iec or something else.
I answer myself. In the comment below I see that it can be used. Apologies
74ALS – Advanced low-power Schottky. Same technology as 74AS but with the speed/power tradeoff of 74LS. 4 ns, 1.2 mW, 4.5–5.5 V.
74LS – Low-power Schottky. Implemented using the same technology as 74S but with reduced power consumption and switching speed, due to larger resistors. Typical 10 ns gate delay, remarkable (for the time) 2 mW dissipation, 4.75–5.25 V.
Hi JMJM, I did not try 74ALS. I think it will probably work, but I can not guarantee. If you try, I will be happy to learn the results. Thank you.
Thanks for replyng, I'll give it a try and let you know. :)
Hiya, I've finally had chance to build and test a couple of these, and I can confirm that it seems fine to replace the 74LS133 with the ALS version. The ones I've built are working great. Thanks C64iSTANBUL! :)
Thank you JMJM. :)
I just put one together using 74ALS133 and can also confirm it works.
Thank you Jason Ginsburg.
Hi! Does all the components come with the PCB if i order one from PCBWAY?
I'd rather get the STL's here for FREE: https://www.printables.com/en/model/119336-final-cartridge-iii-case
Hello Antony Oldham, you can use standart 2V-3V (3mm or 5mm / red, green, yellow) LEDs. Thank you for asking.
Thank you, Archon is a Electronic Arts game and Electronic Arts company is still active working, so threre is copyright problem. I can say that; special shaped cartridge is not suaitable for all games because of some thecnical reasons. My email adress is c64istanbul@bikom.com , thank you.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archon:_The_Light_and_the_Dark
Hello, Thank you. Some games like Mario Bros, Boulderdash, Pitfall... have still copyrights. Many software companies like Activision are still working. I can only make cartridge of abandonware software. I do not know much about PCBWay remuneration policies, I prefer 10pcs. and Chinese Registered Post, it is cheap and reliable. If you like, you can share your case designs under related PCBs. Thank you.
Good point, esp. with Mario Bros I believe but many ppl already made Zaxxon/Super Zax. Carts. As for a case my personal choice is one out of Plexiglass/Polycarbonate clear to show off the Cart but later a 3D Printable one that will have to not hide the Cart...will share for sure! Thx.
Yes, there is an advantage of using 27C020 (27C2001) DIP32. 27c512 is 64kilobyte, 27c020 is 256kilobyte, with 27c020 you can use "PROGS" menu, this is "PLUS" function. With 27c512 you can make old sytle final 3 cartridge (not plus) (without PROGS menu) (see pictures). ---------- W27c020 is elecronically erasable memory, 27c2001 is Ultraviolet (UV-C) erasable memory. w27c020 can be erased and programmed more times than 27c2001. For this final3+ circuit they both do the same job.
That seems to be a very good option...I really seem to like the Projects you have especially Aztec Challenge! I'd love to make a Custom Case that was Clear to show off the Cart itself although I would use a Red PCB. You have a knack for making some Great designs including Falcon Patrol and Pole Position... you could probably create a Great Mario Bros (new version of course) or a Zaxxon/Super Zaxxon. There is a Zaxxon Cart but no great graphical PCB, lol. Funny that I have a lot of family in Turkey, but mostly in Istanbul? Btw, I badgered PCBWay to finally add an affordable Shipping to Canada, although risky option in China Post, so that making a couple of PCBs would be feasible.. Gonna try and place one order of a few items to save on combined shipping, I hope PCBWay provides some remuneration to you, let me know and thank for the quick response.
