Tektronix AFG5101 Small Extender Cable - 32-Pin
This is the small adapter cable to allow for calibration and servicing for the Tektronix AFG5101 Arbitrary Function Generator.
It allows for the removal of the output board to enable access to the adjustments on the Analog board, and also for the removal of the Optional Synthesizer Board or adjusting the crystal reference.
It is one part of a set, so check my profile to find the other larger cable.
To construct this cable, simply bend the pins inwards slightly on the plugs so they lightly grip the PCB and then solder into place with the parts aligned straight. masking tape is good for holding things steady on the desk.
Also, ensure that the orientation is correct as shown in the photos!
For the ribbon cable, a little fiddling around is needed... (I made mine 35cm long)
You will need to split one end into pairs, then flip each pair as shown in the image. This is to make the cable a true 1-1 straight through cable.
I found it easiest by placing some tape sticky side up on the bench and sticking the cable down as you flip the wire pairs, then taping over the top of the lot to hold it all in place while you crimp the cable into the IDC connector.
It's a little fiddly but can be done with some care.
Also, it doesn't matter which side the ribbon cable enters the female IDC connector, as long as it's flipped the right way.
You will also find that two pins on the IDC connectors aren't used on the PCB. I just pulled them out of the male connectors with pliers.
Just be sure you pull them out on the correct side at each end.
There is also a 90 degree adapter that I made to allow clearance for some of the adjustments on the Analog board (the straight adapter is used for the Optional Synthesizer Board).
Some strategic bending of pins and extending with tinned copper wire as shown in the images works well.
You will also need two SMB male-to-female cables. These can be sourced from ebay, simply find a listing that allows you to request custom lengths and get two made at the same length as your ribbon cables (mine are 35cm long).
