(DIY) CONTROL PORT DONGLE for Commodore-64

586220 DIAGNOSTIC CARTRIDGE

The 586220 diagnostic cartridge is a very popular Comodore-64 diagnostic tool. It can test many functions of your Commodore-64 and find if there is a fault. Previously I shared a PCB to make a 586220 diagnostic cartridge.

But the 586220 diagnostic cartridge is not enough for testing everything, you need some extra connections (dongles) for testing input/output ports.

I have prepared some simple dongles to test the input / output ports for you. In fact, you can make these dongles using only connectors, cables, and a few resistors. However, it will be easier to make and use them with these PCBs.

There are a total of six dongles (5 PCBs) in four projects. You just need to make an extra serial port (disk drive port) dongle using DIN6 male connector and two cables without using PCB.

All tests will pass FULLY when all 6 dongles are connected and the 586220 diagnostic cartridge is inserted into the C64.

The two control port dongles can only work if the keyboard dongle is connected. Please note,control port dongles only support testing the game paddle functions (controlled by the SID). Control port dongles do not test four joystick directions and fire button functions! 2 pcs. D-SUB 9 Pin Female Connector (for 2 control ports dongles)

805-12p 2x6 pin 3.96mm Pitch Card Edge Connector (for datassette port dongle)

805-24p 2x12pin 3.96mm Pitch Cad Edge Connector (for user port)

6 pin Male DIN Connector (for serial port)

20 pin female header. (2x20 pin double row female header will be better) (for keyboard connector)

150 ohm 1/4 watt Resistance (for datassette port dongle)

330 ohm 1/4 watt Resistance (for datassette port dongle)

5pcs 680 ohm 1/4 watt Resistance (optional)
